Automaticity is fluency. That doesn’t mean memorization. For someone to be fluent in something, the exposure must be there. We want our beginning readers to really be fluent in both their letter names and their letter sounds. We want them to see the symbol and be able to spit the name or sound out without thinking about it. This takes repeated exposure and explicit practice.
